I'm an MHS Alum & I strongly believe that changing the mascot is a huge mistake. It will not only ruin the school history, but take away from current students.

I am an Alumni and have NEVER seen the name Rebel as anything but standing up against those that oppress. Keep the name!

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#19

I am a maryville alumni and I’m proud to be a maryville rebel! That is the mascot we grew up with and changing it is uncalled for! It would break my heart to look back at my high school years and it not be the same as how I grew up. Once a rebel always a rebel!

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#21

I’m signing because I completely support the Maryville Red Rebels and all that the school system stands for.

I went to school there an it was rebel strong

(Sevierville, 2020-06-20)

#28

I refuse to be silent over the nonsense of removing the Red Rebels name. We will keep the Red Rebels name alive and well. We will represent it with grace and encouragement to the community.
My prayers are with the school's administration and teachers. Let's get to work, folks. #Rebel4Life

I am a Maryville High School alumni and I will always be a rebel! There is no reason to take that away from past, current and future Maryville Rebels student! There is NOTHING wrong or racist with it and everyone that thinks that there is should be ashamed of themselves and go on!!!

I believe the Rebel name should stand alone for the School it was picked to represent. It was not considered a Confederate school or taught that we were confederates in any way. It was but a ideal that the school was not the same as other schools, but Striving to be better in Education and Sports to turn out good people of all ethnic backgrounds, equally with good principles, so they can be more then they were before attending Maryville High School. To decry that the name is racist or derogatory deflates it's efforts to be more then just another school. It brings Proud memories of what "WE" rebels of all color stood for and still stand for today.

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#60

The Rebels nickname has NOTHING to do with the confederacy. Those who want to change it need to step up with the millions of dollars it would take.

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#63

Rebel for life.

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#65

I agree with Eric about the Rebel name. I feel strongly about this as I was present when we lost the flag and Rebel man mascot. The Rebel name is only racist if you want to make it that way.

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#66

I am a MHS Alumni and feel as if the name should stay the same as it is a tradition we have made. There is nothing in the name Rebels that come off as Racist, if you feel it is racist then open a history book and do some research on not only history of the US but also MHS! Go Rebels! Once a Rebel always a Rebel!!

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

I’m signing this petition because I am an alumni of Maryville High School. I am also signing this petition because we can’t erase history. My family has all gone through Maryville City Schools and has never had a problem with different races. In fact, Maryville High School encourages diversity in their schools system.

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#68

I’m. MARYVILLE REBEL!!!.!!!!

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#70

I’m an alumni and they have always been called REBELS and it’s a tradition handed down from generations so why change it because some people are offended they can move somewhere else to attend school

I strongly oppose changing our name!

(Knoxville, 2020-06-20)

#92

I am sick of history being erased! MHS is part of my proud history.

(Woodstock, Ga., 2020-06-20)

#96

It’s ridiculous to change a logo because some people are “offended”. If this wasn’t an issue 20 years ago, why is it an issue now

(Alcoa, 2020-06-20)

#105

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being the rebels!

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#107

Lifelong Blount County resident, born and raised I went to Maryville High School and was a Maryville Red Rebel when I was there, and I hope it's a Maryville Red Rebels when I die. People need to get a grip on themselves, or they have no idea what can of worms they're are opening up. I live through those days when it was at its worst if it comes back I think it will be even worse this time. God Bless America !!!

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#108

I am the first of three generations that have graduated from MHS in my family. We accept everyone and we pray we can be be accepted for who we are and for that which we stand as well.

I’m signing because being a Maryville Rebel has and always will be tradition. It’s not a bad one. Why change it?

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#117

I’m signing this because people need to stand up to the soft people that want to complain about history.

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#120

In this case the name does not imply anything racist. Enough is enough.

(Mary, 2020-06-20)

#123

My daughter attended Maryville. The Rebel name has been accepted for many years by numerous ethnic backgrounds of people and is a loved mascot for our school. We should not be forced to change our heritage and history of Maryville High School!

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#127

Class of 1993. Proud Rebel!

(Murfreesboro, 2020-06-20)

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#133

I am signing because I am a Maryville Rebel

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#136

I went to Maryville High School and there is no need to change the mascot. This is simply the whiny liberals trying to change the past. It is a school mascot, leave it alone.

(Murfreesboro, 2020-06-20)

#137

THE MOVEMENT TO CHANGE THE NAME IS RIDICULOUS!

(Maryt, 2020-06-20)

#142

Once a Rebel always a Rebel!!

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#144

The idea to change the name from “Rebel” is a completely ignorant and uneducated idea. Those in favor and behind this change do not understand the history of this school, this city or Blount County. As an alumni of MHS I never felt unsafe or threatened by the name. This is ludacris and if changed will be a complete mishandling by the school board.

(Gallatin, 2020-06-20)

#148

Because changing the nem is WRONG!

(Townsend, 2020-06-20)

#149

There is no reason for a change . I don’t feel the millennial cause has merit

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#155

I believe in the freedom of all.

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#157

Do not change the name! All symbols have been long removed. This award winning school deserves this richly earned named. Yes, I grew up along side many a rebel. Some of them were Rebels. Gotta love ‘em.

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#164

I do not agree with erasing our history. No I'm not proud of it, but it shows where we have come from as a human race. Changing the Mascot is absurd.

Class of 2001.

(Kingston, 2020-06-20)

#166

I am very proud to say I am a Maryville High school Rebel alumni

(Titusville, 2020-06-20)

#168

I'm signing this petition because I am a graduate of the Maryville Class of 1992. I don't feel as if the school mascot is hurting anyone. People are taking today's conflicts way out of proportion.

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#174

I’m a Rebel born,
I’m a Rebel bred,
and when I die,
I’ll be a Rebel dead!

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#177

I'm signing because the mascot has always been the rebel's and it should not be changed and while on the subject give them their Flag back

(Rockford, 2020-06-20)

This is silly. We should not let emotions make us do stupid things.

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#181

Graduate of Maryville High School

(Knoxville, 2020-06-20)

#183

I don’t believe the name has been associated with the confederacy beyond the former use of the flag (which was stopped years ago). Also, there are many forms a “rebel” can take that isn’t correlated to that. We don’t even have a mascot along those lines. I am proud to be a Maryville Rebel.

(Franklin, 2020-06-20)

#186

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!! Been Maryville Rebels since I went to MHS in 1987! Absolutely NO reason to change it now, only because someone might be "offended"!

(Pigeon Forge, 2020-06-20)

#187

I’s signing because I agree, it doesn’t need to be changed. It is rich in school spirit and pride. It has nothing to do with racial .

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#188

Rebel for life! ❤️🖤

(Austin, 2020-06-20)

#191

Because you can’t change history by randomly changing names. It’s ridiculous. The Maryville Rebels are not Confederates. Get real.

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#192

I am a 1980 graduate of Maryville High School. Here is a link to an article about the history of MHS Nickname… it has NOT always been REBELS and it is not connected to the Confederate flag! https://www.thedailytimes.com/news/confederate-flag-has-tenuous-history-in-county-schools/article_02622331-54e1-52de-944b-7867f13ee4a6.html
"Maryville High School hasn’t always been the Rebels. It was known by at least three different names — Red Elephants, Crimson Whirlwind, and The Red and Black — prior to 1936 when the school became known as the Rebels in response to sanctions brought against the football program.
Maryville High was suspended in 1935 from playing any teams in Tennessee as a result of using two “illegal” players in the previous season, according to an Aug. 27, 2004, story. Its current name is attributed to a comment made by then-Coach Dean Bailey, who said his team was a bunch of rebels against the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association.
"It was several decades before people began to mistakingly identify the Rebels with the Confederal battle flag,” said Oliver “Buzz” Thomas, who served at that time as the board’s chairman, in a May 18, 1999 article. “We’re not the Confederate Rebels. We’re the Maryville Rebels.”
Maryvile Red Rebels are an icon in this community. We cannot allow a name to be changed that has NOTHING to do with racism or is degrading in ANY way.

(Greenback, 2020-06-20)

Proud alumni and have used the Rebel name for a product( race car chassis) that I manufacture.

(Maryville, 2020-06-20)

I am a '82 Alumni and very proud of our school. Somethings should remain the same!
