Petition Regarding the 2026–2027 Tuition Increase at Rice University

We, the undersigned parents and families of current Rice University students, respectfully express our concern regarding the tuition increase announced for the 2026–2027 academic year.

For many years, Rice has been known for advocating the idea of “best value” among top private universities. However, the nearly seven percent tuition increase this year appears to move Rice quickly toward the highest tuition levels among peer institutions, which raises concerns for families who chose Rice partly because of its commitment to value and responsible cost management.

The scale of this increase also appears significantly higher than general economic trends. The national average salary increase in the private sector has been about 3.25%, and recent inflation has been approximately 2.6%–3%. Many Ivy League schools and other similarly ranked private universities have taken a more moderate approach this year, with smaller tuition adjustments. Texas has also experienced relatively stable living costs compared with many other regions, making the magnitude of this increase difficult for families to understand.

The frequency and magnitude of tuition increases in recent years are also causing disturbing ripples within the Rice community. Many parents have expressed concern that high sticker prices, combined with large annual increases, create a “demographic donut” that disadvantages families who pay full tuition but do not qualify for substantial need-based financial aid.

For the 2024–2025 academic year, Rice announced a 9.9% increase in tuition for incoming first-year students, raising tuition by $5,664.

For the 2025–2026 academic year, Rice announced a 6.56% increase, raising tuition by $4,125.

When increases of this scale occur repeatedly, families find it difficult to plan financially and may begin to question whether the cost trajectory remains consistent with the university’s long-standing commitment to value.

We respectfully ask the university to provide greater transparency regarding the specific factors behind this decision, including a clear breakdown of the percentage contribution of major cost drivers that led to this year’s increase.

Another concern shared by many families is the growing sense of two different tuition realities within the same university. While we strongly support the university’s efforts to expand access and financial aid, the current structure means that many full-pay families bear the full impact of rising tuition. This creates a perception of unequal burden among students within the same academic community.

Rice is widely recognized as being in a strong financial position, with a substantial endowment and high endowment per student. Because of this strength, families reasonably expect tuition increases to remain measured and consistent with peer institutions, rather than rising at a faster pace.

We are also concerned that continued large increases may discourage highly qualified students from enrolling or remaining at Rice. When families paying full tuition feel that costs are becoming unpredictable or unfair, they may choose other universities, even when Rice is their preferred academic choice. For many families with more than one child, the current cost level already makes it difficult to consider sending another child to Rice.

We respectfully suggest that the university consider additional measures to support students who are paying full tuition, such as expanded merit-based scholarships or clearer pathways to reduce financial burden for students who demonstrate strong academic performance.

Rice has built its reputation on academic excellence, fairness, and long-term vision. Maintaining reasonable and predictable tuition policies will help preserve that reputation, attract outstanding students, and strengthen support from families and alumni.

We appreciate your attention to these concerns and respectfully request a clear explanation of the factors behind this increase, as well as careful consideration of its impact on current and future students.

Sincerely,
