Keep the Rebels name

I am proud to be a Maryville Rebel that is how I grew up. Nothing racial about it

(Knoxville, 2020-06-21)

#405

I’m signing because I completely agreed with removing the confederate flag. I completely agreed with removing the confederate soldier as a mascot. But the name “Rebels” isn’t from the confederacy. It’s from being “rebel”lious against the rules where players who played football for Maryville High School were concerned.

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#413

I'm signing because of the heritage

(Knoxville, 2020-06-21)

#414

This is my alma mater and the Rebel name represents my school. I am always proud to say I am a Rebel and it has nothing to do with the color of anyone's skin, but a high school with excellent academics and sports teams.

(Kingston, 2020-06-21)

#418

I am an alumni from the class of 1974

(Benton, 2020-06-21)

#421

I'm a Maryville REBEL dammit
Class of 1985.

(Dandridge, 2020-06-21)

#422

TRADITION--LEAVE IT BE !

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#427

I am not an alumni of MHS both of my kids are. I served as MHS Marching Band Parents vice president one year and as president the next year in which that year the band did a concert tour in Hawaii.

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#430

Changing the mascot and name is RIDICULOUS! I say bring back the rebel flag!!!

(Murfreesboro, 2020-06-21)

#431

There is nothing wrong with their name, "Rebels"! It is a shame that some people think it's offensive. I am a Alcoa High alumni, and I am very proud of of the Maryville Rebels!

(Madisonville, 2020-06-21)

#433

I believe the human condition is in such a depraved state the changing the name of a school will in no way help the human condition.
Destroying culters and history will nevrr solve the man's fallen condition.

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#435

I’m signing this because it is my heritage and has absolutely nothing to do with racism.

(Lexington, 2020-06-21)

#443

This is stupid

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#448

The minority does not decide for everyone

(Fall branch, 2020-06-21)

#449

With the confederate flag's (symbol of a treasonous act) removal some years ago the name of Rebels reflects the original rules infractions in 1936 and does not represent negative connotations associated with race, religion, or creed some wrongfully boast. As an American we are all Rebels so the name should yield pride and is in no way associated with the wide-range of adverse feelings that were created in a teenage environment and cited as reason from removal. Teenage insecurities are a product of every high school in this country and around the world not the name of the school or its nickname. God Bless America!

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#450

This is ridiculous! If we sit back and think, we all could be offended by something. Before too long the public will have to wear all of the same uniforms so no one is offended. Adults grow up because you are raising the future Americans. Seriously folks... because of a school mascot? Maryville High school isnt the only rebel mascot in sports.....

(Greenback, 2020-06-21)

#453

I went to Maryville Jr. High and High School, Loved being a Maryville Rebel!!

(Friendsville, 2020-06-21)

#454

I strongly agree with the statements made above!

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#458

Because I am a long time fan and believe that this has to stop somewhere. The rebels already gave up there school flag several years ago because of someone was offended that only came to one game and threatened. It’s time to stop changing names or things because of the past or history. Name matter what people do they can’t change history period. GO REBELS.

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#461

You can’t erase history. Rebel pride. We always had the best pep rally’s. School Spirit!!!

(Kodak, 2020-06-21)

#467

The other petition has signatures of people who don't their history of the name Rebels as it applies to the MHS sports groups name.

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#468

I want to keep the Rebel tradition intact and free from political pressuring.

(John's Creek, GA, 2020-06-21)

#474

I’m signing as a Maryville Rebel Fan! Group up in Maryville City Schools system, this is a name the look up the definition of Rebel! The ones trying to change tradition and history are Rebels . Education is key !

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#476

I graduated in 1986. Proud to be a red rebel and think they should keep the name. The confederate flag can go but rebel has a different connotation which is positive . . . a fighter!

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#480

I’m a Maryville Red Rebel for Life!!!!

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#482

I am signing because

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#484

People have gone crazy.........

(Maaryville,, 2020-06-21)

#487

My time at school was full of tradition. Nobody waving that flag or cheering the name was doing so in the name of racism, but in the spirit of tradition and being proud of there school. To change the name would only erase the legacy of so many great students and to give in to progressive pressure which goes against our tradition of fighting forward.

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#488

I'm a Maryville Rebel Alumni class of 1993 and I'm proud to be a Rebel.

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#494

I graduated in June 1990. The name “The Rebels” has nothing to do with racism. It’s Heritage not hate!!

(Knoxville, 2020-06-21)

#496

Because it’s just a name.

(Nashville, 2020-06-21)

#497

I did not attend MHS but as a member if this community my entire life, I do not want the mascot name to change. The history of the school should be honored and leave it as it has been for so many years.

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#503

I love maryville rebels and the flag that stands for our school

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#505

Class of 2020

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#507

Keep the Rebel name.

(Port Elizabeth, 2020-06-21)

#513

MHS has been known as "Rebels" for over 80 years...has nothing to do with "seeking justice for victims of police brutality" as the other petition claims. Erasing history does NOTHING to obtain justice. It DOES divide us further.

(Lyman, 2020-06-21)

#516

I went to Maryville High School and the Red Rebels are a tradition that has nothing to do with the confederacy or racism!

(Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#518

It’s ridiculous to change the name to make a few happy. We know what the Rebels are and it has nothing to do with Racism!!!! My sons graduated from there and I am no happy

(Palm Coast, 2020-06-21)

#519

It's just a name, dont make it more than it is.

(Walland, 2020-06-21)

#521

I was a proud Rebel for 6 years in Jr and Hi school. I don't remember any problems related to the Rebel name. As far as no longer in school or local resident, I will always be a proud Rebel.

(Hartford, 2020-06-21)

#534

I attended MHS and want to keep it.

(Columbus, 2020-06-21)

#535

I believe that now is the time to confront shamers and apologists who are assaulting our history, traditions and values. Proudly sent two sons to Maryville. Go Rebels!

(Louisville, 2020-06-21)

#536

I am a former Red Rebel. MHS class of 1994

(Powell, 2020-06-21)

#538

My son goes to Maryville and we as a family believe the name of our school has nothing to do with the confederacy.

(Maryville, 2020-06-22)

#540

Because 4 generations of my family have attended Maryville City Schools and racism has never been a part of it. The entire world should not have to change to accomodate one race.

(Maryville, 2020-06-22)

#546

I’m alumnus and the petition to remove the Rebels name is bogus

(Maryville, 2020-06-22)

#547

Things are going way too far and this is a prime example!!!

(Alcoa, 2020-06-22)

#548

I agree! If it were not for Rebels throughout history nothing would have changed!

(Maryville, 2020-06-22)

#549

It blows my mind how people can get so wrapped up in this and are putting time into something like changing a high school mascot (that’s been the same for 50 PLUS years...a school with all sorts of “tradition” Running through it) is a waste of time. People need to go out, use their time to better impact the community as a whole and not piss EVERY ALUMNI EVER off for changing the mascot. I do understand if they’d want to permanently ban the use of the confederate flag, but don’t change the mascot. People need to be going out and utilizing freedom of speech at a protest or putting a petition up that would actually DO something instead of determine whether or not Maryville High School should not be called “rebels” or not. Seems a bit ironic to me, all these people trying to start a rebellion against the school board/city/admin (what ever)...it’s laughable really. Everyone needs to take a deep breath. REBELS FOR LIFE ❤️

(Maryville, 2020-06-22)

#561

I’m signing bc I have no tolerance for dum;)&$assss;:/&ness!

(Maryville, 2020-06-22)

#562

I am married to a Rebel alumni. I respect and support the tradition of the Maryville Rebels.

(Maryville, 2020-06-22)

#563

The name Rebel has absolutely nothing to do with anything racism! There is nothing that doesn’t offend someone!

(Maryville, 2020-06-22)

#564

(Knoxville, 2020-06-22)

#565

My parents, sisters and two sons and myself proudly graduated fro Maryville High School . Never was their a racist thought about our mascot and the flag.

(Maryville, 2020-06-22)

#566

I think changing the names of things because they might offend is ridiculous.

(Madisonville, 2020-06-22)

#567

My son went to Maryville.
Also my niece and nephew went there.
I am a strong support of the Maryville Rebel’s.

(New Market, 2020-06-22)

#568

Its my right to

(MARYVILLE, 2020-06-22)

#569

It’s time for a community to take a stand and rebel against the sort of behavior that can tear a country apart from the inside out.

(Maryville, 2020-06-22)

#571

The thought of this is insane. What is wrong with these people????

(Friendsville, 2020-06-22)

#573

I’m Southern and sick of our heritage being removed.

(Maryville/Blount County Seymour, 2020-06-22)

#574

I believe you are correct. Enough of this nonsense.

(mt. pleasant s c, 2020-06-22)

(Maryville, 2020-06-22)

#589

I agree whole hardly

(Strawberry Plains, TN, 2020-06-22)

#592

I’m signing this because I agree with everything in this petition. Why change it now? There wasn’t a problem with it before. Once a rebel, always a rebel!

(Maryville, 2020-06-22)

#593

People need to find something else to whine about sheesh!! Petty people!! Gonna have to change Alcoa Tornados next because Tornados are bad. Also, they are so destructive and cause so much damage!! Come on ppl don't be petty Betty's!!

(Maryville, 2020-06-22)

#594

It's so dumb when I even think about signing something like this. People are looking for racism in everything. Even when it's not there.

(Louisville, 2020-06-22)

#597

A rebel is someone who doesn’t march to the beat of the drum everyone else is marching to. To rebel means to resist. Not to be confederate.

(Maryville, 2020-06-22)
