Residents against mawasco mismanagement of water supply
This petition has the aim of standing up against the water supply mismanagement that is affecting for several months the whole Kilifi County
We want to express deep concern about the ongoing water crisis affecting several areas of Kilifi County, particularly communities served by the Kilifi Mariakani Water and Sewerage Company (KIMAWASCO).
For several months, residents have been facing prolonged and recurring water shortages, reportedly linked to financial mismanagement, unpaid debts, and administrative disputes between KIMAWASCO, the Coast Water Works Development Agency (CWWDA), and the County Government of Kilifi.
According to public reports and official statements, the dispute over unpaid bulk water bills has led to widespread water cuts, leaving many households and institutions without reliable access to clean water. This situation directly affects people’s health, hygiene, and dignity, and may amount to a violation of the human right to water, as recognized by the UN General Assembly and by the Kenyan Constitution (Article 43).
While financial accountability and management reforms are important, collective punishment through water deprivation cannot be justified. The residents of Kilifi are now suffering the consequences of mismanagement and bureaucratic disputes that they did not cause.
Whatever is the cause, businesses are forced to close, tourism is dying and the normal life is compromised.
We need a resolution once and forever!
