PETITION TO IMPROVE THE CONDITION OF ROADS IN WARD 97, BRAKPAN, AND ENSURE APPROPRIATE STANDARDS OF WORKMANSHIP

The residents of Ward 97, along with the residents of Brakpan who utilise the roads within Ward 97 to enter and exit Brakpan, hereby submit the following grievances to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality for urgent attention and resolution:  

1. The quality of road repairs conducted within the ward is far below acceptable standards. These repairs frequently deteriorate within one to two days of completion. This results in a waste of taxpayers’ money, and we therefore demand that appropriate warranties be provided for all repair work undertaken. 

2. The intersection of Main Reef Road and Hospital Road was recently repaired, yet the work failed within three days. Similar issues are evident with road repairs across Brakpan. The main access road into Brakpan has been severely damaged due to illegal mining activities. Despite the dismantling of the illegal settlement previously known as Plastic City, motorists are still compelled to use a poorly maintained detour road. We demand that this detour road be properly maintained on a weekly basis until the original road is fully restored. The continued delay in repairing Main Reef Road is unacceptable, and the road needs to be repaired.

3. Heavy-duty vehicles operated by companies and mines for the transportation of sand and rock are causing significant damage to roads. These vehicles frequently disregard traffic regulations and pose a danger to other road users. Furthermore, they operate outside permitted hours, often from before sunrise until after sunset. We demand that the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) strictly enforce all applicable road regulations, particularly concerning heavy-duty vehicles operating within urban areas. The roads within our ward are not being maintained to an acceptable standard. We therefore call upon the Municipality to fulfil its obligations and deliver the services for which residents are paying.
