Petition for the Suspension of Hungary's NATO Membership

We, the undersigned, demand that the British government take immediate action to suspend Hungary's NATO membership. This demand is based on serious concerns about the current Hungarian government's actions, which are inconsistent with NATO's core values and objectives.

NATO is a defense alliance founded on the principles of democracy, individual freedom, and the rule of law. The Hungarian government has repeatedly violated these principles, including by restricting press freedom, undermining the independence of the judiciary, and trampling on human rights. Such actions are in direct contradiction to the values that NATO defends.

The actions of the Hungarian government undermine NATO's unity and credibility. Member states must be able to trust each other and work together to achieve common goals. Specifically, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's actions cast doubt on Hungary's commitment to NATO’s collective defense, jeopardizing the credibility of this commitment. This endangers the alliance's cohesion and effectiveness, weakening our collective defense capability and security.

Furthermore, the situation is exacerbated by the current conflict involving Ukraine. NATO's effectiveness and solidarity are critical in supporting Ukraine’s struggle against aggression. Hungary's actions and policies, which diverge from NATO's core values, weaken the alliance’s collective response to such global challenges and undermine our support for Ukraine.

We believe that NATO must uphold its core values and set clear boundaries for member state behavior. Suspending Hungary’s membership would send a strong message that democratic principles, freedom, and the rule of law cannot be compromised, and that the collective defense and support for allies like Ukraine are fundamental to the alliance's mission.

We urge the British government to take the necessary actions to suspend Hungary's NATO membership. This measure is crucial to protect NATO’s unity, values, and credibility and to ensure effective support for our allies.

By signing this petition, we call on the British government to act on suspending Hungary’s NATO membership and to uphold the alliance’s core values and support for Ukraine.
