SAVE THE OLD 1919 RUSTBURG SCHOOL BUILDING

Comments

#1

I am signing this petition in hopes that the Board of Supervisors and School Board will recognize the historical significance of the old school building as well as the impact that it has had on thousands of lives over the past 100+ years. In addition, give. The economic impact of COVID-19 should also be considered prior to the demolition of the old building and the available tax credits and grants available if it is incorporated into the new schools architectural plans.

This is more than just saving an old school building; it is about preserving a 100 year old historic landmark. The building can be renovated to a state of the art school and I support any additional buildings that may need to be built to meet the needs of the students. I hope you will join me by signing here and encouraging your friends and family to sign too.

(Forest, 2020-07-24)

I am class of 1970 and spent my career working with historic buildings. This one can be renovated and used for many years to come.

(Lynchburg, 2020-07-24)

This is one of only a very few historical structures in Rustburg. Progress should not mean destruction.

(Lynchburg, 2020-07-24)

alumni of Rustburg and care about preserving the history

(Lynchburg, 2020-07-25)

#18

I graduated from RHS in 1970. The Campbell County schools integrated that year, and the 1919 school building will forever be associated in my mind with the successful efforts of the senior class (and others) to make that historic process a success.

(Philadelphia, 2020-07-25)

#19

This building is so full of memories for those of us who were born, raised and attended school in that building.

(Concord, 2020-07-25)

#21

I’m signing because I went there for high school one year (1978-1979) before we moved to the new high school. Also it is part of history since it had been around since 1919.

(Fairlawn, 2020-07-25)

My mother was a graduate of ybis school, I attended 5th, 6th and 7th grafes in this building, my son took classes in this building as a middle schooler and his two sons had a class in this building. I believe the structure of the building is sound and that it has historical significance to our community.

(Lynchburg, 2020-07-25)

#28

This building is now considering an historical building. And it’s part of the towns history.

(Lynchburg, 2020-07-25)

I went to that school when I was a kid and so did my sister and cousins we all love that school!

(Evington, 2020-07-25)

#36

Like so many others who are signing this petition, I went to both elementary and high school in this building and am a proud 1976 graduate of Rustburg High School. Preserving our historical landmarks as well as being fiscally responsible are foundations our Commissioners and School Board members should base their decisions on. The multiple tax credits available to restore the 1919 Building need to be explored and utilized. Blending this beautiful building with 21st century technology will provide future students with considerable learning tools while gaining appreciation for the architecture that has allowed this building to stand tall within the community for over 100 years.

(Panama City Beach, 2020-07-25)

#37

I attended this school in sixth grade and my father taught there for several years. It is an important part of the community and should be preserved as part of any redesign plan. It can continue to serve students and be reflective of the town’s history at the same time.

(Berryville, 2020-07-25)

#42

I’m signing to support the idea of repurposing old buildings like this one.

(Lynchburg, Va, 2020-07-25)

(Chapel Hill, NC, 2020-07-25)

#44

I am signing because no due diligence has been made to design a solution to save the historic part of the school.

(Lynchburg, 2020-07-25)

#45

This building has memories for me and my family but more importantly is a symbol of the educational history of our little town.

(Rustburg, 2020-07-25)

#46

Its a historic building, buildings like that should be restored not turned into rubble. Think of how many people have memories there

(Rustburg, 2020-07-25)

#52

I work in a building with a similar history that also underwent a renovation (Miller Park School in Lynchburg). The finished product, while still being an “old” building, is just a much of a better product than a new one would be BECAUSE of that age and history. New buildings don’t come with ghost stories. 😁

(Lynchburg, 2020-07-25)

#53

I believe that we should preserve the current Rustburg Middle Sshool Building as much as possible and take advantage of the tax credits available.

(Altavista, 2020-07-25)

(Rustburg, 2020-07-25)

(Newport News, 2020-07-25)

#61

I went to school there many years ago.

(Madison Heights, 2020-07-25)

#64

It's been there so long. Should be deemed historical. I attended 9th, 11th, and 12th grades there and graduated in 1970. It would be a shame and so sad to have it destroyed. It holds many great memories for people who attended this school.

(Buckingham, 2020-07-25)

#65

Not only did I attend but my mother and uncles did when it was an Highschool, my older cousins when middle and my children did as well.

(Rustburg, 2020-07-25)

#77

I went to Rustburg Middle school

(Lynchburg, 2020-07-26)

#78

Without heritage, without markers of our history, without artifacts from and memorials to what was before, we lose the knowledge of what and who shaped our society. Do not demolish this old school but, instead, restore and keep it as a community centerpiece.

(Spring Hill, 2020-07-26)

#79

I uphold this petition, not because of my having attended and graduated from here, but because it is a prime example of good, solid architecture. My dad also graduated from their in the mid-30s. This old building should be the focus of the old joined with the future.

(Lynchburg, 2020-07-26)

I support the efforts of the Campbell County Historical Society to preserve the history of the area for future generations.

(Evington, 2020-07-26)

#92

I believe this building means more to those who were educated within it than the Board realizes. Not only that, the 1919 building is historical in value which affords Rustburg a deeper, more meaningful place in Virginia history.

(Rustburg, 2020-07-26)

#93

I attended school there. Please do not erase all of the history of that iconic building. Many upstanding citizens are the result of that school.

(Saint Petersburg, 2020-07-26)

#94

I want to save the school

(Lynchburg, 2020-07-26)

#95

I’m signing because I do not see tearing down the Middle School. I was a graduate of The Class of 1976 last high school class to graduate. We do not need to tear down our History.

(Evington, Virginia, 2020-07-26)

The school should be saved. It’s a part of the community’s history.

(Midlothian, 2020-07-26)

#98

My 5th grade class was in that building in 68-69. Mrs. Elizabeth Irving was my teacher & I learned very valuable life lessons there.

(Rustburg, 2020-07-26)

#100

Building should be on historic register and deemed historic site.

(Erwin, 2020-07-26)

#104

I attended Rustburg. Too many old buildings are being town down and replaced with more modern. We need to keep as much history as possible.

(Madison Heights, 2020-07-26)

#105

It’s my school, as well as my parents. Save the history, please!

(Florence, 2020-07-26)

#106

I attended RHS - graduated in 1976 and it was a remarkable experience and many lifetime memories and friends. Those of us who attended at that time may not see each other often but that is the building where we created a bond.

(Waynesboro, 2020-07-26)

(Houston, 2020-07-26)

#128

RHS class of 1969. Don't feel the options to save part of the old school have been seriously explored.

(Bristol, 2020-07-26)

#130

It’s nice to have some history remain, as so much of it is already being erased all around us. These buildings, originally hosted what once was, Campbell County High School, an all black school, before being integrated and changed to Rustburg High School. This is something that many people don’t even know; History already lost.

(Lynchburg, 2020-07-26)

#131

I am signing this petition because this school is too good to just test it down. It is a piece of Rustburg History! Also, I was an 8th grader and started my high school years in that school, while the current RHS was being built. So, it does hold some great memories for me, as well!!

(Madison Heights, 2020-07-26)

#132

Our family like many others in Rustburg have had 4 generations go to that school and we have many memories there. I think we should build a new school however we need to preserve our History. This could be made into a museum of some sort like the courthouse.

#163

The school is a landmark paid for by the citizens of Campbell County.

(Forest, 2020-07-27)

#164

I'm signing because that building is literally a piece of Rustburg history. So much of the historic Rustburg has already been lost to modernization; let's find some way to renovate & incorporate the old building into the new plan. My father graduated school from that building. My mother went to school there. For four wonderful middle school years, I made memories and friends there that still matter to me today. I met some of the best, and worst, teachers of my life in that building. I was sitting in that exact building in my Language Arts class with Ms. Lawson (now Mrs. Godsey) when 9/11 happened. That building is not only precious to me, but to many many people in the community.

(Gladys, 2020-07-27)

this school was home

(Lynchburg, 2020-07-27)

#191

I spent many memorable hours in this old building!

(LYNCHBURG, 2020-07-27)

#192

An iconic structure like this must be saved. Countless students walked these halls, and they should be remembered, as well as the teachers and administrators that worked to hard to prepare them for their future,

#194

I would like to save our school building and not waste tax payers funds.
