We, the undersigned, call on Clare County Council to develop a safe, accessible, and fully enclosed dog park in Shannon, Co. Clare, to provide a dedicated space for dogs to exercise off-leash, socialise, and promote responsible pet ownership in our community.

We, the undersigned, respectfully submit this petition calling for the establishment of a dedicated Dog Park in Shannon Town.

Purpose & Justification
Shannon is a vibrant, growing community — yet unlike many European towns, we lack a designated, safe space for our dogs to exercise, socialise, and play freely. Across Europe, dog-friendly towns provide such spaces, complete with waste bag dispensers and bins, to encourage responsible ownership and maintain cleanliness. It is time for Shannon to align with these standards.

Benefits to the Community and Environment
A dedicated Dog Park would:

1. Reduce Environmental Pressure – By providing a specific area for dogs, we can help protect our wetlands walks around the Points, safeguarding the wildlife and preserving the natural green areas.

2. Encourage Responsible Ownership – Supplying designated waste bags and bins will make it easier for owners to clean up, keeping our town tidier and more pleasant for everyone.

3. Enhance Community Life – A Dog Park offers a place for neighbours to meet, socialise, and build community spirit while their pets interact.

4. Improve Pet Welfare – Dogs need safe, open spaces to run and play, which improves their physical and mental health, and reduces behavioural issues.

5. Promote Public Health – Dog owners who have access to secure spaces are more likely to walk and exercise with their pets, leading to better overall wellbeing.

6. Cleaner Public Spaces – With fewer dogs roaming uncontrolled, the town’s streets, parks, and natural areas will be cleaner and safer.

Conclusion
We believe that a Dog Park in Shannon Town is not just a convenience, it is a necessity. It supports responsible pet ownership, protects our natural heritage, fosters community connection, and promotes a cleaner, healthier environment for all residents.

We therefore urge the relevant Council body to approve the development of a designated Dog Park at the earliest opportunity.
