Petition for Domestic Violence Supports In Peterborough

We, as Trent University students, recognize that there is an issue surrounding a lack of Domestic Violence support in the city of Peterborough, Ontario. The Peterborough Police Department’s Domestic Violence Victim Services Unit is made up of only two social workers, and offers brief counselling before referring survivors of domestic violence away from the police’s support. The Unit also has no specific supports for Black communities, despite Black communities being historically overrepresented in Domestic Violence Statistics.

We are asking that the Peterborough Police expand their Domestic Violence Victim Services Unit by increasing their number of social workers and implementing specific supports for Black communities.
