Frontier Environmental Petition to the IWC
In 1986 the IWC placed a ban on commerical whaling and the trade in whale products. However, despite this ban over 30,000 whales have since been killed, through countries exploiting certain loopholes in order to continue whaling.
Each of these countries operates under a different loophole to the IWC's ban.
Japan carries out whaling under the 1946 provision which allows the killing of whales for "scientific" purposes.
Iceland and Norway simply continue to hunt whales through an objection to the IWC's ban.
Through signing this petition you will be supporting Frontier's efforts to persuade the IWC to remove these loopholes, so that the ban ensures that 0 whales are killed, allowing whale stocks to replenish.
Frontier was established in 1989 as a non-profit conservation and development non-governmental organisation (NGO) dedicated to safeguarding biodiversity and ecosystem integrity and building sustainable livelihoods for marginalised communities in the world's poorest countries. One of frontier's projects focuses on the protection and research of whales and dolphins in Tenerife.
