URGENT COMMUNITY REQUEST FOR INTERVENTION REGARDING HEALTHCARE SERVICES AT FAYE CLINIC

RE: URGENT CONCERN REGARDING THE REDUCTION OF FAYE CLINIC SERVICES DUE TO NURSING SHORTAGES
Dear MEC Simelane,
We write on behalf of the residents of the Efaye Community, Ward 3, uMshwathi Municipality, uMgungundlovu District, to respectfully request the urgent intervention of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health regarding the reported reduction of operating hours at Faye Clinic.
We have been informed that, due to a shortage of nurses, the clinic will no longer provide services during weekends and will operate only during weekdays.
We fully appreciate the challenges faced by nurses and the healthcare system, and we do not wish to blame or undermine the nurses working at Faye Clinic. We recognise the important work that they perform under difficult circumstances.
However, we are deeply concerned about the impact that the reduction of services will have on our community.
Efaye is a rural community and does not have a hospital. Faye Clinic is therefore a critical healthcare facility for residents of the area. Many residents depend on the clinic as their first and, in many cases, only accessible point of healthcare.
The withdrawal of weekend services creates particular concerns for:
* Pregnant women and mothers;
* Babies and children;
* Elderly residents;
* People living with chronic illnesses;
* Patients requiring medication and follow-up care;
* People requiring urgent medical attention;
* Residents without private transport; and
* Poor and vulnerable households who cannot afford long-distance transport to another healthcare facility.
We therefore respectfully request that the Department not simply close weekend services without providing an alternative healthcare arrangement for the community.
We request an urgent meeting between representatives of the Efaye Community, Faye Clinic, uMgungundlovu District Health Management, the Ward 3 leadership and the Provincial Department of Health.
At this meeting, we would like to discuss practical solutions, including:
1. Deployment of additional nurses to Faye Clinic;
2. A rotational weekend nursing roster with neighbouring healthcare facilities;
3. Provision of mobile clinic services during weekends;
4. Extended operating hours on selected days;
5. An appropriate emergency referral arrangement for residents when the clinic is closed;
6. The filling of vacant nursing posts affecting the clinic and surrounding facilities; and
7. A clear communication plan informing the community where patients should seek assistance when Faye Clinic is closed.
We further request that the Department provide the community with clarity on:
* The current staffing establishment of Faye Clinic;
* The number of vacant nursing posts;
* The reasons for the reduction in operating hours;
* The anticipated period for which the reduced services will remain in place; and
* The interim measures that government will put in place to protect access to healthcare for the Efaye community.
We wish to emphasise that this is not a confrontation with the Department of Health or with the nurses at Faye Clinic. We are approaching government as a rural community seeking a constructive solution to a matter that directly affects the health and safety of our residents.
We believe that every effort should be made to ensure that rural communities are not disproportionately affected by staffing shortages.
We therefore respectfully request an urgent meeting with the relevant officials and ask that the Department provide us with a written response regarding the way forward.
We remain committed to working constructively with government to find a sustainable solution.
