Support a Balanced Cell Phone Policy at Ridgefield High School

As a Ridgefield parent of two high school boys, longtime community member, and professional with over 30 years in the technology and telecommunications industry — including  significant time employed at a company in Sandy Hook,  I am deeply aware of both the benefits and risks that come with digital access.

While we all share the goal of reducing classroom distractions, a proposed “bell-to-bell” cell phone ban at Ridgefield High School goes too far. This policy would remove phones from students’ possession all day, eliminating access to important safety and wellness tools — including the Sandy Hook “Say Something” violence prevention app, mental health hotlines, and secure communication in emergencies.

The current policy already prohibits phone use during class time while allowing access during free periods and lunch. It strikes the right balance between focus, responsibility, and safety.

We urge the Ridgefield Board of Education to maintain the current cell-free classroom model rather than implementing an all-day ban that could compromise both student safety and opportunities to teach responsible technology use.

Please sign to show your support for a balanced, safe, and practical approach for our high school students.
