ACTIVE CITIZENS OF GREATER MIDDELBURG CONDEMN ALLEGED POLICE MISCONDUCT AND DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY FOLLOWING “MARCH TO MARCH” OPERATION
MIDDELBURG, MPUMALANGA | 11 JUNE 2026 — The Active Citizens of Greater Middelburg publicly condemn the events that allegedly transpired during the planned “March to March” community operation conducted on 9 June 2026.
The movement states that the operation was intended as a lawful and community-driven initiative aimed at verifying documentation, addressing concerns relating to illegal immigration, and supporting local law enforcement in maintaining law and order within the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality. According to the organization, the initiative sought to work in cooperation with state authorities to promote safety and legal compliance within the community.
However, the organization alleges that the conduct of certain members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) during the operation has severely undermined public trust and confidence in local law enforcement.
Key Allegations
1. Procedural Interference
According to the organization, during the search of a residence, occupants specifically requested the presence of only two officers, namely Officer Scott and Colonel Jiyane. It is alleged that upon entry, Officer Scott declared the premises “clear,” despite activists later reportedly discovering illicit substances, laptops, and printing equipment on the property.
2. Concerns Regarding Potential Corruption
The movement further alleges that the presence of a Department of Home Affairs official at the scene, coupled with what they describe as the shielding of the property by certain officers, raises serious concerns regarding the integrity and transparency of the operation.
3. Alleged Assault in Custody
Following the arrest of activist Mr. Nkazi Mabena, the organization claims to have received credible information indicating that he was subjected to physical assault while in SAPS custody, allegedly resulting in visible injuries to his head and eye.
“The Active Citizens of Greater Middelburg organized this ‘March to March’ initiative to help build a safer community. Instead, we were met with obstruction, suspected collusion with criminal elements, and violence against our own members. We will not be silenced by intimidation or alleged police brutality,” said a spokesperson for the organization.
Demands for Accountability
The organization states that formal notices of complaint have been submitted to the following institutions:
The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS
The District Commissioner
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID)
The MEC for Community Safety
The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC)
The organization is demanding:
A comprehensive internal investigation into the conduct of the officers involved.
An immediate and independent investigation by IPID into the alleged assault of Mr. Nkazi Mabena.
A formal written response and status update regarding the investigations within 24 hours.
The movement has called on members of the community to remain peaceful, vigilant, and law-abiding while justice is pursued through appropriate legal channels. It maintains that those entrusted with protecting citizens must be held to the highest standards of accountability and the rule of law.

There are growing concerns regarding alleged violations of human rights by the State, highlighting the need for accountability, justice, and adherence to constitutional and international human rights standards.
