Redesign JK and SK playgrounds to support safe, active play

S S H · CA

The current restrictive, playpen-style playground for Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten students should be revised that balances safety, supervision, active play, exploration, and healthy childhood development. A fenced-in layout may appear easiest to contain or control, but it can limit the very things young children need most from outdoor play: space to explore, movement choices, and opportunities designed around what children genuinely need.

For JK and SK students, outdoor time is not just a break from class. It supports physical development, confidence, cooperation, and problem-solving through play-based learning. When a playground is overly enclosed and tightly controlled, children have fewer chances to run, negotiate space, invent games, and develop the wareness that comes from an appropriate place to play and grow.

A safer playground does not have to be a smaller, more restrictive one. The school board and municipal representatives should work together to redesign the structure that safety, supervision, and developmental value are balanced rather than treated as opposites. Open sightlines, varied play features, room for movement, and age-appropriate boundaries can all support supervision without turning the space into a playpen.

We ask the responsible school board and municipal decision-makers to remove the current fenced-in design and direct staff to bring forward a revised playground plan for JK and SK students that better supports exploration, active play, and early childhood development. If the current layout stays unchanged, children will lose a daily environment that can strengthen confidence, coordination, and social learning during the years when those experiences matter most.

This issue is not about making the space less safe. It is about making sure the design reflects how young children actually learn and grow. A kindergarten playground should encourage movement, curiosity, and healthy challenge — not unnecessarily limit them.

This petition is not asking the Board to compromise safety. It is asking the Board to listen, reconsider, and create a space that protects children while still allowing them to experience the movement, curiosity, confidence, and joy that childhood should include.

Please sign this petition if you believe our youngest students deserve a safe, spacious, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate place to play and grow.
