Protect Livanjsko polje!

Livanjsko polje is the largest marsh complex in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the largest temporarily flooded karst polje in the world. Recent research in this area indicates the presence of more than 700 vascular plants, 42 species of dragonflies and damselflies, 39 butterflies, 16 fish species, four of which are exclusively related to karst waters, 6 amphibians, numerous mammals, including a population of about 150 wild horses and 235 birds. Of particular importance is the large breeding population of Corncrake (Crex crex), the most numerous in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of the largest in the entire Balkan region. Also, Livanjsko polje is an important wintering site for 70000 waterbirds.

Due to its exceptional natural values, Livanjsko polje was declared a Wetland of International Importance in 2008, and in 2011 it was included in the list of Important Bird Areas. It is currently on the list of potential Natura 2000 sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina. However, Livanjsko polje still has no legal protection in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina, despite the fact that it represents one of the most important biodiversity hotspots in the county. 

In order to preserve its natural values, it is necessary to protect Livanjsko polje in accordance with the Nature Protection Law of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Protecting this area is of paramount importance, especially if we know that a large part of its primordial ecosystems have been disturbed or completely destroyed due to unsustainable use.
