PETITION FOR CLEAN WATER AND NATURE - NO TO MINES

We, the undersigned, demand that the nature and water bodies of the Riutta area (Joensuu and Kontiolahti, North Karelia) be protected from mining projects. We do not accept the endangerment of vital clean water and unique nature for the sake of short-term economic gain.

Water is our lifeblood, and its purity is a fundamental right. The planned mining projects threaten to irreversibly destroy our groundwater, lakes, rivers, streams and surrounding nature.

Millions of kilograms of berries and mushrooms are collected in North Karelia every year. Koli National Park, which is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located only ten kilometers from the northernmost part of the proposed area. The large lakes Pielinen and Höytiäinen are unique fishing destinations. We know from Talvivaara that the environmental damage from mining is permanent and the bill for it will be paid by taxpayers and future generations. Money cannot replace polluted groundwater or polluted water bodies. Even a single drilling operation can contaminate groundwater.

We demand from decision-makers:

Suspension of permit processes: All ongoing mining reservations and permit applications regarding the Riutta area (Joensuu and Kontiolahti) must be rejected.Priority of water bodies: The preservation of clean water and ecosystems must be placed above industrial activity in all decision-making. We, who live and work here, must have the right to decide on the future of our living environment. Nature and clean water are our most valuable heritage. According to Section 20 of the Constitution, everyone has the right to a living environment that does not endanger health or well-being; public authorities must ensure the conditions for the sustainable use of biodiversity and living environments.
