Independent data show that the 3 Olympic lightweight events had the closest average percentage difference (1st to 6th) of all events on the programme (meaning they were the most competitive) from 1996 - 2012. They also had some of the highest numbers of distinct nation entries (more universal), and higher entries than the comparable open category events over the 4-year cycle. The men's four, by contrast, had the second lowest % difference, the 5th lowest distinct nation entries, and the lowest number of distinct nations represented on the podium.
Given that Olympic boxing has ten well established weight classes that seem to cause no problem to their governing body, it is truly hard to understand why any consistent, rational minds might think that maintaining two weight classes in rowing is not appropriate!

For the lightweight category to survive legitimately (especially in Australia) in rowing more emphasis is required on the natural lightweight and not those who drop weight for one or two events throughout the year. (If you are lightweight be lightweight for the whole season).
