Upgrade Sewer Infrastructure in Bedfordview!

We the residents of Bedfordview hereby petition the Executive Mayor of the City of Ekurhuleni, Cllr. Mzwandile Masina, as well as the MMC for Water, Sanitation and Energy, Clr Tiisetso Nketle, to expedite the upgrades of the sewer infrastructure in the community.

The continual sewer overflows are a contravention of the National Environmental Management Act, but also creating a serious health hazard for the residents, motorists and pedestrians in these areas.

This health hazard is in contravention of our National Constitution, which states that everyone has the right –

(a) to an environment that is not harmful to their health or wellbeing; and

(b) to have the environment protected, for the benefit of present and future generations through reasonable legislative and other measures that –

(i) prevent pollution and ecological degradation;

(ii) promote conservation; and

(iii) secure ecologically sustainable development and use of natural resources, while promoting justifiable economic and local development.
