Protect Victims and Impose Just Penalties on Offenders

D Dorina Borus · HU

Perpetrators of sexual violence must be held accountable and receive punishments that match the severity of their crimes. When these cases are prolonged, trivialized, or left without consequences, it not only fails the victims but also sends the message that such crimes are not serious enough.

The impact of this is felt in everyday life. Victims often lose their sense of security for a long time, and their work, studies, and relationships may suffer as a result. If the system does not respond consistently, it may also discourage other victims from seeking help or reporting incidents.

There can be no delay, excuses, or misguided leniency in cases of sexual violence. We need procedures and sentencing practices that clearly state: Non-consensual sexual acts are serious crimes and must remain so in practice, not just in law.

Therefore, we urge the National Assembly, the Ministry of Justice, the prosecution, and the courts to ensure the consistent investigation and swift, victim-centered handling of sexual violence cases, and the imposition of punishments proportional to the severity of the act. The legal system should serve the safety of victims and the enforcement of justice, not the convenience of offenders.

If decision-makers take this seriously, it will strengthen public trust, protect victims, and set a clear boundary against violence. Sexual violence can only be reduced if accountability is real and sentences reflect the gravity of the crime.
