Empowering Pediatric Cancer Patients Through Collaborative Music Production
Our Mission Since 2005, Purple Songs Can Fly has operated with a singular, beautiful objective: to positively impact the lives of pediatric cancer patients and their families by helping them write, record, and share their own original songs. We are petitioning to expand this incredible program by establishing a dedicated branch right here in Austin, Texas.
Currently operating out of Texas Children's Hospital in Houston, the program transforms the clinical environment into a sanctuary of creation. We approach willing patients directly in the waiting rooms of the oncology wing, offering them a temporary escape from their treatments. With full approval from the patient and their family, we bring them to an on-site recording studio equipped with instruments, microphones, and digital audio workstations. The children take the lead. They write their own lyrics and sing with their own voices while volunteers collaborate with them in real-time to build beats and produce the music. A week later, a fully polished, professionally produced track is sent to the patient and their family. The process provides an unforgettable, joyful experience, and the final track serves as a deeply meaningful bonus that commemorates their resilience and journey.
Why Austin? As a volunteer who has witnessed this transformation firsthand—recording instrumental parts and collaborating with these brilliant children—I know the profound impact this program has. Austin is the Live Music Capital, teeming with world-class creatives, producers, and artists who are searching for meaningful ways to lend their talents to a beautiful cause. We have an untapped reservoir of musicians and artists ready to be mobilized.
