Petition Against the Repeal of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (VAPP)

N Naija Feminists Media · NG

IMG_92301.jpegWe urge the Nigerian government to uphold the VAPP Act, a landmark legislation passed in 2015 to combat violence against persons, particularly women, children, and vulnerable individuals.

This crucial law provides vital protection, support, and recourse for victims of abuse while holding offenders accountable for their actions.

The Bill, which aims to introduce a total overhaul of the Act, was first presented in April 2022  by Senator Jibrin Isah of Kogi East District, was kept under review and sent back to the Senate in July 2024. It has now passed through a second reading and has been referred to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Repealing the VAPP Act would have devastating consequences, including:

- A significant increase in domestic violence cases, putting more lives at risk.

- Emboldening abusers, leading to further exploitation and harm.

The VAPP Act has been instrumental in safeguarding Nigerian women from life-threatening situations.

We must ensure its provisions remain in place to:

- Protect victims' rights and dignity.

- Deter perpetrators and promote accountability.

- Maintain progress towards a safer, more equitable society.

Join us in calling on the Nigerian government to #StopTheRepeal and #ProtectTheVAPPAct.
