Choose your own web address for the petition
Every petition gets its own address at the end of the site's domain, for example https://www.petitions.com/save-our-school. The address is built from the petition name, and you can replace it with something shorter that is easy to say out loud, print on a flyer and type from memory.
How to choose the address
- On the create page, open Advanced settings at the end of the step Your petition.
- The proposed address is shown after the site address under Petition URL. Press Edit next to it.
- Type the address you want and continue. If it is already in use or reserved, the form says so and you can try another.
Allowed characters are lowercase letters a to z, numbers, hyphens and underscores. The address can be up to 200 characters long, but the point of choosing it yourself is to make it short.
Changing it later
Choose Settings in the petition menu and edit the Petition URL field. The old address is not thrown away: it keeps pointing at your petition, so links already printed, posted or shared do not break. That matters once a petition has been shared, because you cannot take a link back out of a group chat.
Short addresses for posters and flyers
A petition can also have extra short addresses. Choose Create short web address in the petition menu and pick something very short, for example the name of a street or a campaign. People who use it are redirected to the petition's current address.
One petition can have up to 20 short addresses. That lets you print one address on the poster, use another in a radio interview, and still see every visitor arrive at the same petition.
Who it helps
Anyone who has to tell people the address out loud. A campaign that is collecting signatures at a market stall, a school parents' group printing 500 flyers, an association reading the address into a local radio show. A long address copied from a browser bar survives none of those. A short one does.
Good to know
- The address is part of the site domain for the petition's language. A language version of the same petition has its own address on that language's site.
- Some addresses are reserved for the site's own pages and cannot be used for a petition.
- If you protect the petition with a password, remember that the address is not behind the password. An address that repeats the petition name tells anyone who sees the link what the petition is about, so choose a neutral address for a petition that should stay private.
Questions and answers
Which characters can I use?
Lowercase letters a to z, numbers, hyphens and underscores.
Can I change the address after the petition is published?
Yes, in "Settings" in the petition menu. The old address keeps working and sends visitors to the new one.
What if the address I want is taken?
The form tells you so and you pick another. Each address can belong to only one petition.
How many short addresses can one petition have?
Up to 20. Each of them redirects to the petition's current address.
Does the address affect how the petition is found?
An address with the words of your cause in it is easier to read in a search result and easier to trust in a link. It is no substitute for the title and the text, which is what search engines read.
