Upgrade Cox’s Bay Basketball Court and Calisthenics Station

IMG_9302.jpegWe, the residents of Westmere and Grey Lynn, are calling for an immediate commitment from the Waitematā Local Board to renovate the basketball court and calisthenics station at Cox's Bay Reserve.

In a modern Auckland, our parks are the 'living rooms' of our suburbs. We believe that the best way to celebrate our community and support our health is through active, outdoor connection. We want a space where whānau can gather, where neighbours can become friends through fitness, and where our youth are encouraged toward social , positive engagementrather than isolation or antisocial behaviour.

While we acknowledge the investment in the new cricket training zone, the rest of our fitness hub is failing. The current basketball area is undersized and outdated. The hoops are aged and the primary poles show clear structural rust. While the concrete cracks are currently manageable, they are a warning sign. By acting now, the Council can perform preventative maintenance to future-proof the foundation before it requires a total, multi-million dollar rebuild. Furthermore, the calisthenics station is literally falling apart, the safety mats are peeling off the ground, creating dangerous trip hazards and deep mud pits during the winter months. It is also far too small to accommodate the growing number of locals who want to train together.IMG_9296.jpeg

We ask the Waitematā Local Board to finish the job at Cox’s Bay by installing a full-sized basketball court. There is more than enough physical space at the current site to accommodate a regulation full court, which would allow for proper games and community tournaments, providing a high-quality youth zone that currently doesn’t exist in our immediate area. We also request the expansion of the fitness hub by installing a larger, modern calisthenics station with a professional, all-weather poured-rubber surface to eliminate mud and slipping. Our goal is to design for connection by creating a space large enough for groups to catch up, meet new friends, and train together safely.

We look at the world-class facilities at Victoria Park, the modern hoops at Waterview, and the high-quality upgrades at Coyle Park, and we have to ask: Why has Cox’s Bay been forgotten? While these neighbouring parks offer safe, vibrant, and expanded spaces for their communities, Westmere is left with rusted poles, peeling mats, and a cramped half-court. We are not asking for a luxury, we are asking for the same basic standard of safety and social space that the Council has already successfully delivered in every direction around us. It is time for Cox’s Bay to catch up

Cox’s Bay should be a destination that reflects the pride of Westmere. We don't want a park that is half-finished or hazardous, we want a safe, modern, full-scale environment that brings people together. Let’s build a better, more social Cox’s Bay.
