I would urge everyone to read "The Famine Plot" by Tim Pat Coogan. This book, which was published in 2012, proves beyond all reasonable doubt that the Great Hunger was caused by the laissez faire policies of elements of the British Government and establishment who wanted to greatly reduce the population of Ireland in order to reform its agricultural practices. The British people were not to blame.

I thank you for yor signature. It is important to note that the ordinary people of England endured extreme hardship also under Government in Westminster at the time. Many ordinary English folk gave donations to the suffering Irish. I would be failing in my duty as a site administrator if I laid the blame on the English people. The blame lies squarely on the Government of England and the likes of Trevelyan,Russell, Palmerston and Clarendon plus many others that held power. The great Irishman, Daniel O'Connell stood in the Parliament and told them that if were up to the generosity of the English people, the Irish problem could be solved. He went on to say,"Unfortunately, it is the generosity of the English parliament that is required". They looked down upon their own as well to their shame.  Thanks, Joe.
