Petition to prohibit payment operators from terminating access to services due to objections to legal content
We appeal for the introduction of a ban on payment operators and processors unilaterally ceasing to provide services due to objections to content that is legal.
We believe that access to financial services is crucial for the functioning of a free market and civil society. Decisions by commercial financial intermediaries should not restrict the lawful activities of entities or citizens’ right to freely use payment services.
Therefore, we call for:
-
The introduction of regulations prohibiting payment processors from refusing to provide services based on subjective assessments of legal content.
-
Ensuring transparency and clear procedures in situations where there are legitimate legal grounds for restricting services.
-
Protecting the right of citizens and entrepreneurs to use financial services in accordance with applicable law.
Similar initiatives and petitions have already been submitted in countries such as the United Kingdom and Canada, and partly also in Australia and Ireland.
In the United Kingdom, the petition “Ban payment processors stopping services based on objections to legal content” has been active since 26 August 2025.
